Lamentations 3:21-26 Yet this I call to mind and therefore I have hope: Because of the Lord’s great love we are not consumed, for His compassions never fail. They are new every morning; great is Your faithfulness. I say to myself, “The Lord is my portion; therefore I will wait for Him.” The Lord is good to those whose hope is in Him, to the one who seeks Him; it is good to wait quietly for the salvation of the Lord.
At family dinners, we will often go around the table and do a “Best Worst Most” summary of our day. What was the best thing that happened? What was the worst thing that happened? The “most” moment usually ends up with someone just telling something random they wanted to share, like “most cute golden retriever I’ve ever seen at the park” or “most zoom calls in a single day.”
There are times when someone has had a terrible day and can’t think of a “best”. Those are the times that we help each other look for the good, even if the only thing we can think of is the moment we are in, eating together.
Because God is good, there is always good to be found.
In Lamentations, the author (whom most scholars think is the prophet Jeremiah) is mourning the terrible fall and destruction of Jerusalem. But even then, he finds hope and good by looking to God’s character and provision.
He finds this by:
Intentionally looking for the good. (”Yet this I call to mind and therefore I have hope”)
Identifying the goodness of God Himself. (”great love” “His compassions never fail” “The Lord is good” “The Lord is my portion”)
Choosing to worship. (”great is Your faithfulness”)
Choosing to act based on trust in God’s character, rather than circumstances. (”therefore I will wait for Him” “It is good to wait quietly for the salvation of the Lord”)
When we look to God, we can always find some good.
Because God is good, there is always good to be found.
Lord, You are the source of every blessing in my life, and I praise You for Your goodness. Help me to approach today from a place of trusting You.

Songwriter Notes: Come Thou Fount is one of my favorite hymns, and this makes no attempt to replace it, but just update the lyrics to be more straightforward in meaning for modern listeners. This is one of the few songs I know that can flow easily in 5/8 meter, so that was fun —just the thing to get stuck in your head and remind you of the goodness of God.
